An abyssal plain is a vast, flat seafloor area that lies at a depth exceeding 6,000 meters. Synonyms for the term may include the name of the oceanic zone in which it occurs, the abyssopelagic zone. It can also be referred to as the benthic zone or deep-sea plain, highlighting its flat, featureless surface. Other descriptive phrases include oceanic trench, deep-sea floor, or simply just the abyss. Abyssal plains cover approximately 60% of the Earth's surface and provide important habitats for deep-sea creatures that have adapted to life in extreme pressure, cold, and darkness.
