Alkanes are a class of hydrocarbons that are characterized by a single bond between carbon atoms. They are also known as paraffins and are the simplest form of hydrocarbons. In addition to the term alkane, there are other synonyms used to describe this group of compounds. These include saturated hydrocarbons, something that refers to the fact that all of the carbon atoms in the chain have the maximum number of hydrogen atoms attached to them. The term methane series is also used to refer to alkanes because the first member of the series is methane. Other synonyms include acyclic hydrocarbons, as they are chain-like molecules with no branches.
